Newsletter – Issue 18

Dear EATAW Community,

We are excited to announce in this edition of our newsletter the forthcoming EATAW 2025 conference. At our recent board meeting on April 25, 2024, we met with the conference organizer to discuss dates, locations, themes, and more. Many of you may know the organizer well, and we are confident that our collaboration with the organizing committee will lead to another memorable event.

We are also pleased to share the publication of EATAW’s position statement on AI. We extend our heartfelt thanks to those who provided feedback on our initial draft. We plan to update the statement as new information emerges or when insights from the EATAW community suggest adjustments are needed.

With kind regards,
Djuddah Leijen, on behalf of the EATAW Board

EATAW’s Policy Statement on Generative AI and Writing

In light of the growing use of AI tools in higher education, the EATAW Board has developed a statement on Fostering Digital Scholarship based on Critical Thinking and Reflective Use of AI. We hope this document, developed with the cooperation of outside educational experts, will provide guidelines for EATAW members to promote best practices concerning AI use in their institutions. Given the speed of change in this field, we are open to revising this document periodically with the suggestions of members.

Get ready for the EATAW 2025 conference in Braga, Portugal!

Braga is a historic city in the north of Portugal. 50 km away from Porto, 60 Kms away from the Spanish border and 160 km away from Santiago de Compostela. It was an important city in Roman times (Bracara Augusta), the starting point for various access routes to other parts of the Iberian Peninsula. Today, Braga is a combination of history and modernity, attracting people from all over the world to live and work, or simply to enjoy everything it has to offer.

Founded in 1973, the University of Minho is nowadays renowned for its competence and quality of teaching staff, excellence in scientific research, wide range of undergraduate and graduate courses offered and for its high level of interaction with other institutions. UMinho has a central role in the region and is an important reference for the country and a recognised partner in the European and global scene.

EATAW needs you!

As ever, the Board are interested in hearing what EATAW activities members would like to get involved in. After a pause, we want to get started again on developing an EATAW podcast, so if that is something you want to help with, please let us know. Another area of particular interest for us is the development of an EATAW social media presence – so do reach out if you are interested in that too. Send Tom an email if you’d like to help with either of these initiatives (tmuir@oslomet.no).

Call for Applications: Managing Editor for the Journal of Academic Writing (JoAW)

We are pleased to announce the following opportunity: EATAW members are invited to apply for the role of Managing Editor for the Journal of Academic Writing (JoAW).

JoAW’s Managing Editor will work closely with JoAW’s Editors-in-Chief and will liaise with other members of JoAW’s Editorial Team to ensure that the journal’s publication schedule is adhered to and that each issue of JoAW is produced and published to an agreed timeline.

Specifically, the Managing Editor will:

  • lead on the production of JoAW issues by managing each issue’s manuscript workflow processes (Submission, Review, Copyediting, Production) and by scheduling and publishing JoAW issues within JoAW’s Open Journal System (OJS) software platform,
  • use JoAW’s OJS software platform to assign and liaise with Peer Reviewers and to communicate with Authors, Guest Editors, Copy & Layout Assistants, and other members of JoAW’s Editorial Team as necessary,
  • regularly update the spreadsheet for each issue and update the journal’s OJ webpage text when needed.

The Managing Editor role requires the ability to:

  • work efficiently and in a well-organised manner
  • keep track of deadlines and correspondence
  • advise authors about revisions needed
  • be confident about determining the general quality of manuscripts
  • learn to use JoAW’s OJS software (with support from JoAW’s Editors-in-
    Chief and Technical Support colleagues).

The incoming JoAW Managing Editor will be mentored by JoAW’s Co-Editors-in-Chief, Dr Lisa Ganobcsik-Williams and Dr Magnus Gustafsson. The time commitment for this role will vary during the year, but on average, the Managing Editor will spend two hours per week on JoAW work. There will be a monthly hour-long Editorial Team catch-up and planning meeting.

To apply for the JoAW Managing Editor role, please email your current CV and a letter expressing your interest and detailing your experience and suitability for the role to the Co-Editors-in-Chief at joaw@coventry.ac.uk.

The deadline for applications is Monday, 10th June. Shortlisted applicants will be invited to a Zoom/Teams interview in late June and a start date will be negotiated for August/September.
